Valley of Crownlost

2013-05-11

Marc is woken from his nightmare with a start after Winston, also formally of Hope Village, dumps water on him. Marc had passed out in Winterhaven street after another night of over drinking, which Winston gladly reminded him.

Despite butting heads Winston told him about a half-orc, Theron, mercenary that was recruiting men to clear out a band of orcs North of Winterhaven. Marc hated for orcs is well known so he jumps at the opportunity to kill orcs.

Marc scoffs at Winston when he suggest he clean himself up and leaves to find Theron. The half-orc isn’t at the tavern he was directed to, but a couple of mercenary types our hanging around so he sits down and waits for him to return.

Marc tries (Failed Stealth) to sit closer to listen in on the mercenaries conversation, but the Tavern owner sees him eyeing the mercenaries. The barkeep , he is familiar with Marc’s behavior, ask that Marc not start any trouble. Marc glares (Successful Intimidate) at the keep and orders a meal. The barkeep scurries away nervously a doesn’t both Marc again, other than to deliver his meal.

After spending the better part of the day and most the evening Theron arrives at the Tavern and Marc talks to him about joining the group to hunt orcs. Theron armor was impressive for a mercenary and Marc noticed (Successful History check) that he cared a shield used by the former King’s personal guard. Despite this and Theron calm manor, Marc is unable to contain his disgust for the half-orc, his hatred rounds up, and also fails to Intimidate Theron into hiring him on to the band.

Marc left to collect a few things for the short trip. He returns to the tavern and plops down at a table and orders dinner. He decides he would just camp out in the tavern until the group left and would follow them. He made no attempt to hide his intent to the chagrin of the barkeep.

After a couple of days, without incident, Theron and his men begin preparing to head out. Marc starts to head out of the tavern to be in a better spot to follow them when the leave.

Winston stops him on the road to let him know he was joined the band of orc hunters. He suggest Marc should stop embarrass the people of Hope Village, formerly of the village and stop being hostile long enough for Winston to talk Theron. Marc gave a noncommittal grunt and glowered slightly less.

Winston is able to convince Theron to let Marc join, mostly because Marc didn’t want a share of any treasure found. Theron, Winston and Marc along with 14 other mercenaries head out that morning to hunt orcs, small bands remain of a once mighty horde that dominated the region.

Since the fall the the Kingdom of Steadfast years ago the roads of the northwest are unsafe and in poor repair. Nearly all the bridges have either collapsed or been destroyed since then as well.

With Marc’s assistance the mercenaries had no trouble when they had to ford the west river. The West river flows south from Eternal Springs Lake then southeast all the way to Union Lake in Central Crownlost.

As they travelled north, Marc found signs of a insectoid in the area which helped them avoid being ambushed by an ankheg that had burrowed into a hill on a side of the road. Unfortunately, they were unable to avoid the creature completely and Thoren was injured and 4 of his men were killed. (Successful: Spot).

They manage to avoid anymore danger, but they happened upon an unlikely pair on the side of the road. A gangly little girl in ratty looking cloths with a tall handsome in leather armor and two fine short swords. The band stop for a bit to chat with the pair. The girl told them to turn back because there were far too many orcs for their band of 13 men. The man, think the girl impolite, confirm that the orcs had made camp in a old town called hope village, Marc and Winston’s old home. He also informed them there were at most 20 orcs at the most.

Convince that their information was truthful despite their reservation of why the pair was this far north in dangerous country the band decide to move on happy to know that their intel was accurate. After the man and girl left they considered the new information headed out. They round the hill and the pair was nowhere in sight despite having a vantage point that let them see clear to the coups of trees surround the village. It was decide they had no reason to doubt the pair so they moved on. (Endless Chain of Failures though most of the information was valid).

After they arrived at the village a few of the mercenaries and Marc scouted out Hope village as the rest of the group set up camp in the wooded area just west of orcs (Successful Stealth). They confirmed the number of orcs and saw that they were very poorly equipped.

They made their plans to set up a firing line in the woods with Marc and 5 men southwest of the village. Thoren and the rest of the mean would sneak into position at the path into the village to the west. Winston would sneak in and set fire to a few of the huts to create confusion and retreat back to Thoren and his men. The distraction and confusion should make it easier to keep the orcs attention off of the archers and let the archers surprises the unsuspecting orcs.

Winston approached the nearest hut and managed to get it lite, however he didn’t notice a orc that was nearby and the orc surprised him, but missed anyway. (Failed Stealth, Wisdom). Without the fire the attempt to cause confusion failed, but the initial orc was so focused on catching Winston he was taken by surprise and quickly put down by the archers. The remaining Orcs were alerted, wary and “en masse” to take on the band, but still unaware of the archers.

Session ended on that note.

Party

Marc (Ranger)
Father Dominick (Cleric) new member joined to take part in the playtest.

Father Dominick was introduced as a wandering priest of Helm that choose to walked the roads of crownlost valley as a protector to travels and spreader of the teachings of helm. He had heard the sounds of fighting while he was travelling south along the road near Hope village and decide to investigate.

He arrived in time to see 10 down mercenaries and Thoren and Warren surround by 6 of the remaining orcs while 4 more orcs were in pursuit of pursuing Marc. Using the power of helm he was able to assist in finish up the remainder of the orcs. After all was said and done, there were 20 dead orcs, 6 dead mercenaries and 4 injured mercenaries. Marc Succeed in a heal checks and I rolled a 2d4 to decide how many survived. Dominick tended to the badly injured Thoren.

They search Marc’s former village and found a handful of gold and gems and a carving of what looked like a face that was sagging two one side. Succeed Search Check: Marc

Dominick and Theron wanted to bury the dead. Since the village had a cemetery they decide to make use of it to bury the dead mercenary. While doing so Marc thought he heard talking and decide to go check it out while the other were busy. Perception Check: Success: Marc, Father

Marc wanted to approach quietly to try to listen in on the conversation and was able to pick out two voices; one girls voice that sounded anger and a mirthful male voice. They were not able to make out much of the conversation before Dominick and Marc alerted them to their presence causing the to lower their voices Failed Stealth: Marc, Father

The two were the same two that Marc and the band of mercenaries had come across earlier. This time Marc noticed that the girl looked familiar, but was too indifferent to think much about it. Father Dominick notice almost immediately that the girl bared a strong resemblance to Marc. Insight Check: Auto-Failed Marc, Success: Father Dominick

The girl was quiet after making an accusation of Demikeal of command his agents and having him dismiss the thought to greet the party. The man was offered them hospitality as if they were enter his home and not standing in the burnt out stone structure of a little house.

The cleric had recognized that the girl bore resemblance to Marc and not Demikeal so it made him very suspicious. During the course of conversation Father Dominick noticed the man using a number of possessive statements in regards to the girl and realized quickly they were not terms of endearment. He started inquiring more directly and ask the girl her name she said she didn’t have one. When he asked Demikeal he stated she was never given one and he never bothered to name her. This of course set off all kinds of red flags and the conversation and when he was asked directly he admitted that the girl belong to him. Mostly Roleplayed with an occasional Insight checks and a History check to inform the player of character knowledge. Section had to be retconed a little so if you ever decide to watch the youtube video I recorded it won’t match up completely with the recorded session.

In realizing the girl was a slave Dominick drew his weapon and attacked with Marc joining him. The moment they engaged him the girl collapsed to the ground writhing in pain and Demikeal use his will to fear the Dominick and Winston (who had come along). Marc shrugged off the fear and attacked Demikeal and a weird flickering shadow of wing creature showed each them hit struck. Demikael called on Helm for protection from evil after recognizing the momentary image surrounding Demikael as a cambion. Demikael used his power to command Marc to kill his daughter and nearly did before recovering. Winston who was cowering in fear exclaimed “This isn’t how it was suppose to go!” and was then incinerated by infernal fire that also injured Marc.

Demikael’s illusion was destroyed when Marc grievously injured him and Father Dominick finished him off with a combination of inflict wound and an attack with his mace (older packet).

While tending to the now unconscious girl they had discussed whether or not a half-devil could be killed or just sent him back to hell. Even with the Father knowledge they were unsure. Religious Lore: Success But…: Father

After waking, the nine year old was angered because the party had ruined her plan to escape the Devil pact. She explained she had manipulated the cambion into a wager that she would kill 20 orcs before tomorrow, 10th Nameday, to be completely free of the pact. If she lost the wager, she would be willing surrendering her soul to Demikael. The party didn’t question her tale because they were trying to calm down an angry near hysteric little girl.

Domnick calmed the girl. Charisma Check: Success: Dominick. Marc pointed out that they had found another possible location with orcs and suggested that she should stop whining and come with them. Douche Check: Success: Marc. Have to love touching family reunions.

It dawned on Marc that the girl might be his daughter after The Father pointed out after piecing it together that tonight would be 10 year anniversary of the destruction of Hope Village to the Babylon Mountain Orcs. The event which had prevented Marc from retrieving the medicines he need to cure his family of the Desolation, a fatal disease. When asked again her name, she explains her parents never bother to name her before they abandoned her to the devil; Demikael never bothered giving her one either seeing no purpose in naming a possession.

The party took about an hour to rest before setting out again, battered and short on spells in an effort to complete the girls task before midnight.

Introduction: The Sum of all Nightmares

Marc looked out from his hidden perch in the trees unnoticed as orcs passed on their march towards Hope, his home. He believe his imagination incapable of manifest a nightmare worse than this. The largest number of orcs he had ever seen before meandered along the trail through the foothills just north of his home.

That, however, was the stuff of typical nightmares made of common fear and mundane machinations. The true source of Marc’s horror dangled from the neck of the leader of the orc horde who leaned casually on his warg mount. The foul orc had about his neck the herb Marc sought to retrieving. There was nothing he could hope to do before a horde of that size and continuing on his hopeless quest to save his wife and unborn child would lead only to more death.

His only option was to flee…

His home was warmed by a fire in the hearth. The hot fire stood in stark contrast to the coldness he felt. Cassi, the mid-wife, stopped him as he entered and said, “Please Marc you should sit down.”

That was the last thing he wanted to do. All he wanted to do is see his wife. He skirted passed the midwife and went undeterred to Sonyia where she laid upon their bed perfectly still.

Cassi followed behind him her voice incapable of masking her sadness, “I did everything that I could do. I did what I could to make sure she was comfortable.”

A hand too heavy for the mid-wife rested on his shoulder to offering comfort. Marc turned to the midwife. The orc, wearing the artifact that could have spared Sonyia of so much suffering said with a solemn look, “I sent you on your task in good faith, but you were too late…”

Mark awake startled.
